A gentle, joy-filled season of making together ✨
Every year as the holidays approach, there’s this collective shift in the crafting world, an urge to slow down, create with intention, and pour a little extra warmth into the things we make. And one of my favorite traditions that supports exactly that is the Indie Design Gift-A-Long (GAL) on Ravelry.
If you’re new to it: the Indie GAL is a community event that brings knitters, crocheters, and indie designers together for six weeks of connection, encouragement, and handmade gifting. Whether you’re knitting for loved ones, donating to a good cause, or simply treating yourself, you’re in good company.
This will be my seventh year participating in the GAL as a designer, and it continues to be one of my favorite corners of the internet -- festive, supportive camaraderie in a season that can otherwise feel hectic.
What is the Indie Design Gift-A-Long?
The Indie Design Gift-A-Long (or “Indie GAL”) is a yearly Knit-Along and Crochet-Along hosted on Ravelry, designed to help you settle into meaningful, joyful making through the end of the year. This year, there are 204 participating designers, and all of their patterns are eligible for the event.
Here’s what you can expect:
Pattern Sale on Knit & Crochet Patterns
From November 20–26, participating designers offer a selection of their patterns at a special discount. It’s a lovely chance to discover new designers, try a pattern you’ve been eyeing, or grab a project that feels just right for your gift-making plans.
A Season-Long Make-Along
From November 20 through December 31, you can knit or crochet any pattern from a participating designer and join themed KAL/CAL threads to ask questions, share progress photos, and cheer others on.
Prizes + Community Fun
The GAL is bursting with games, prizes, encouragement, and a very active group of makers sharing their works-in-progress and finished projects.
A Supportive Making Community
No pressure. No race. Simply people creating handmade things with care, and celebrating each stitch together.
How to Participate
Participation is simple and flexible; join in whatever way feels good to you.
Join the Ravelry group and say hello.
Browse the list of participating designers and discover patterns you may not have stumbled upon otherwise.

Share your progress in the Ravelry threads.
Enter to win prizes simply by finishing projects and posting them.
Above everything else: have fun, craft at your own pace, and enjoy the cozy creativity of the season.

If you're not familiar with GoSadi, it's an up and coming platform being built to support designers and makers. If you join the Maker's waitlist by January 2026 through my affiliate link, you will get a free 3 month trial of the platform!

Why I Love the Indie Designer GAL
Every year I return to this event for the same reason: connection.
The knitting and crochet world can sometimes feel loud or overwhelming, but the Indie GAL always feels exciting and energetic. Makers cheering one another on. Designers supporting designers. A community that remembers why we started crafting in the first place: to create something meaningful with our hands.
Some of my sweetest holiday-season memories come from stitching alongside others in the GAL threads. And whether you finish one small gift or five big ones… every stitch is enough.
What Will You Start Making First?
I can’t wait to see your projects take shape this season.
If you join the Indie GAL, be sure to share your makes in the Ravelry group, and if you’re knitting something for donation or gifting, know that your work carries so much heart.
Wishing you beautiful moments of stitching this season. 💛
Happy crafting, friend.
