Super Bulky Yarn & Color Recommendations for the Totally Spaced It Cowl Knitting Pattern

The Totally Spaced It Super Bulky Cowl is a fun, quick knit that I’ve designed as the perfect last-minute gift for times when you’ve “totally spaced” getting a gift together for someone… or perhaps you’ve been procrastinating. Regardless of the circumstances you might find yourself in, this is a quick, simple knit with basic stitches and an easy-to-memorize repeat.

I knit my Totally Spaced It super bulky cowl sample with Leo & Roxy Yarn Co Super Bulky yarn (a 100% Merino Wool yarn) in their Monet colorway, using leftover yarn from my Cozy in the Mountains Mittens knitting pattern.
However, if you are looking for some alternate yarn recommendations, this blog post is for you.
Yarn Color Ideas for Your Cowl Knitting Pattern
Because the texture of the Totally Spaced It Super Bulky Cowl is quite simple, it really would work beautifully with most any color or color scheme, whether that's solid, tonal, or variegated; muted colors, neutrals, or bold and bright.
I tend to prefer wearing tonals in deep jewel tones or grays, but for my sample, I actually used a beautiful variegated yarn with purples and whites.
As I'm eyeing my stash of super bulky yarn, I'd also really love to see (and wear) it in Knit Picks Fluff of the Andes super bulky yarn in their Calypso Heather color, Knit Picks Alla Lana super bulky yarn in their Lagoon color, or Universal Yarn Posh Alpaca super bulky yarn in their Hemlock color.

Additional Super Bulky Yarn Recommendations
Here are some alternative super bulky yarn ideas for your Totally Spaced It Super Bulky Cowl (or any other super bulky crochet or knitting pattern).
Knit Picks Alla Lana super bulky yarn
I just purchased two balls of Knit Picks Alla Luna (colors Gray and Lagoon) to make myself another pair of With Love From the North Mittens, and it would be a beautiful yarn for your Totally Spaced It super bulky cowl. It's a 100% Merino Wool, and so wonderfully soft!

There are currently 12 color options in Knit Picks Alla Luna super bulky yarn; here's a glance at the color palette.
Knit Picks Fluff of the Andes super bulky yarn
I also just recently purchased a ball of Knit Picks Fluff of the Andes (in color Calypso Heather). It's a 100% Highland Wool, which makes it feel a bit more "natural." I can be a bit (or maybe very) particular about my yarn softness, which means a lot of times the super "earthy" yarns feel too scratchy to me. So, I do notice that this yarn has a little bit of this feel, but it's still got quite a lot of softness.
All that is to say, I might not choose it for a cowl or a sweater for myself, but compared to most any rustic yarn, it's very soft.
There are currently 25 different colors available in Knit Picks Fluff of the Andes super bulky yarn. Here's a peek at 6 of them:
Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick super bulky yarn
If you aren't opposed to acrylic (no judgement either way!), Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick is my favorite pick. Here in the U.S. it tends to be among the most affordable and accessible yarns, since it's stocked at all (or nearly all?) Michael's Stores.
Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick yarn is 20% Wool & 80% Acrylic.
I've used Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick for several of my knitting pattern designs: With Love From the North Mittens, My Favorite Simple Knit Hat, and Last Minute Invite Cowl.
Unlike the previous yarn recommendations, Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick yarn includes more than "just" tonals or solids; so if you're looking for some more interesting yarn colors, they might be right up your lane!
Knit Picks currently has 71 colors of Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick super bulky yarn listed, or you can check out the stock at your local craft store. Here's a peek at 6 of their colors:
Universal Yarn Posh Alpaca super bulky yarn
Another super bulky yarn that I recently purchased (I just bought a bunch of yarn to make mittens and hats for myself and my Mini!) is Universal Yarn Posh Alpaca. It's a yarn blend with 45% wool, 25% superfine alpaca, and 30% acrylic.
The texture actually feels quite similar to Knit Picks Fluff of the Andes, but it's maybe a touch softer (probably from that alpaca!), and I don't think it has as much fuzz to it (probably because it's spun a little more tightly).

There are currently 12 colors available in Universal Yarn Posh Alpaca, several of which are neutral colors. Here's a look at 6 of the colors available:
